Traveling in Sapporo during Golden Week

I'm planning on taking the JR train from Hakodate to Sapporo on April 29 this year, which is (I think) the first day of Golden Week. I'll be with my parents.

Anyone have any idea how crowded it'll be? Should I buy tickets ahead of time, and how much ahead of time? Do I need reserved seats? It's a three- to four- hour ride, and I don't want my elderly parents to have to stand that long. We are thinking of leaving around 3:00pm. We are also open to taking the bus if the trains are going to be full, although it'll take longer.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Everything I've heard about Golden Week suggests that it's worth booking both travel and (if applicable) accommodation as far in advance as possible.

Eep. Yep, that's what people are saying. Thank you!

You'll want to book everything in as far in advance as you can. Basically everything will be full.

No problem. Hopefully the split holidays will make it easier :)

Surprisingly enough I only had to stand once in the Shinkansen during GW. I never reserved tickets.
But considering that you're travelling with elderly people and that Chinese tourists have been flooding in (also during GW) in the past few years, making it even more crowded, I recommend booking in advance.

I hope you've already booked accommodation.

Enjoy your trip! ^^

I remember it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be when I was traveling during Golden Week a few years ago, but you're right, it could definitely be worse now.

Yes, we have booked accommodation :)

Thank you! ^_^
